Spirit Cat
Some animals speak to your soul. In my life I've had two cats who spoke to me that way. One was a ragtag Burmese with a confident gait and smiling personality. The second was a slick black Norwegian skogkatt with Ibs. As a teen my dream was to go to a Waldorf school. I imagined the peace love and bright hearts that could potentially be met with at this alternative school. I imagined campfires and mural projects. My parents were upwardly mobile and we moved to an area that was instead academically competitive and ivy aspirational. I was devastated.
A deep soul with a longing for community and lightness, I felt a profound sense of loneliness having to move away from the town I grew up in. The new posh area we lived was filled with doctors in training and a degree of pretentiousness that warded off the peace love and happiness that my heart so desired. In my heart was a wish for an animal companion. My parents felt sorry for me and the deal was done. An old woman with no front teeth appeared in a beat up pick-up with a confident, personable kitten with blue eyes. I embraced him with enthusiasm and love unknown to any man. He slept with me in my bed like a little child and I spent everyday with him. While I was away at school he bumped his head, and died a sad death outside in the cold.
